Learn languages at Gwinnett Library, free programs available.

Want to Learn a New Language?

At Gwinnett County Public Library, we are committed to meeting the needs of our diverse community. One way we meet this need is by offering Language Programs. Whether you speak another language and want to learn English or speak English and want to learn a different language, we have a program for you. If you’re more interested in self-paced at-home learning, we also have a plethora of digital resources and other aids to guide and assist you in your studies.

Our Language Programs

We currently offer two programs, “Basic English” and “Conversations in English,” for those who speak another language and wish to learn or practice English.

We also offer “Conversations in Different Languages,” a program for those who speak English and wish to learn another language.

Basic English

This course is intended for beginners and those with little English fluency. In these sessions, a facilitator will provide you with English practice materials and will assist you in your native language should you have any questions or difficulties understanding concepts.

We currently offer this program in the following languages:

  • Chinese
  • Japanese
  • Korean
  • Spanish
  • Vietnamese

Conversations in English

This course is intended to serve intermediate to advanced English language learners. We provide materials to help learners advance in their understanding of the English language and facilitate conversations for learners to practice their English and gain exposure to new vocabulary.

We currently offer Conversations in English, both in person and virtually. All conversations are conducted in English.

Conversations in Languages

These programs are intended to expose native English speakers to a world language and to help them gain proficiency in those languages with the assistance of a knowledgeable library staff member.

We currently offer the following languages:

  • French
  • Japanese
  • Spanish

Program Registration

To register for one of our Language Programs, please find your desired program on our Events calendar and register for the event. Here is how:

  1. Look at the events listed below, or click the button “All Language Learning Events”
  2. Once you have found a language program you’d like to attend, click on it, and use the “Register” button on the left side of the page. When registering for an “English in Your Language” program, please be sure to register for the correct language session.

Registration is required to attend all Language Programs.

English as a Second Language through Adult Education

  • Documentation needed
  • Must apply for classes at specific times
  • No children allowed at registration
  • Focus on basic English skills, conversation, and written language
  • No cost for classes

Mango

We also offer access to language-learning software called Mango, available through GALILEO. Mango teaches real-world conversations in over 70 languages.
