GCPL to enhance English language learning classes with $5,000 American Dream Literacy grant

The Gwinnett County Public Library (GCPL) has been selected as one of 16 public libraries nationwide to receive a $5,000 American Dream Literacy Initiative grant from the American Library Association (ALA) and Dollar General Literacy Foundation.

With the funding, GCPL will offer professional development to class instructors and update its curricula for all classes. GCPL offers a tiered series of classes for English language learners. One program, English in Your Language, begins in a student’s native language and progresses to basic English skills. This program is offered to speakers of Spanish, Korean, Vietnamese, Japanese, and Mandarin. A second program, Let’s Talk, provides conversational English practice for those with basic English skills who wish to improve their pronunciation and understanding. Each series is free to attendees and offered three times per year. For more information, visit your local library branch.
