In 1990, November was officially designated as Native American Heritage Month. During this time we celebrate the rich cultural history of our nation’s first inhabitants. In the Southeast, major groups consisted of the Chocktaw, Cherokee, Creek, Chickasaw, and Seminoles. These groups were expert hunters and farmers and many of our major landmarks (such as the Chattahoochee River) take their names from the languages of indigenous peoples.
