On Friday, November 2, 2018, The Gwinnett County Public Library held its very first fundraising gala, Puttin’ on the Litz, and it was truly a memorable evening. The support of the community for this event was monumental. Through the generous patronage of many corporate sponsors, including Presenting Sponsor and educational partner, the Gwinnett County Public Schools Foundation, and Best Seller Sponsor, Primerica, the event raised just over $100,000! The money raised by the event will be used to support and enhance critical library programs offered to Gwinnett County residents including various early learning initiatives and the Career Online High School Program.
Besides the generosity of the sponsors, what made the evening so special? Well, guests were able to enjoy a spectacular evening with delicious food and delightful entertainment. The keynote speech was given by New York Times Best Selling Author, a Norcross High School graduate, Nic Stone. Mayor Nancy Harris lead an exciting live auction with fabulous prizes including beach and mountain homes, and a Luxury Atlanta Package that consisted of a chauffeured Rolls Royce Ghost rental from Milani Rentals, a helicopter tour of Buckhead and Dinner for 8 at the prestigious Frankie’s Steakhouse! Let’s not forget the silent auction prizes of concert tickets, hotel stays, spa packages, and more. Perhaps the most important part of the evening was the Fund-A-Need where guests donated just over $14,000 out of the goodness of their hearts to support early education programs that are conducted by Gwinnett’s Early Education Librarians. This is critical, as currently, in metro Atlanta, only 20% of children are ready for kindergarten, and these funds will allow GCPL play a bigger role in helping to prepare these kids and their families for a successful educational experience when they do enter the school system.
Let’s not forget the grand finale of the evening that was led by the dynamic dueling piano duo, The Andrews Brothers. Guests were able to request songs; some sang along, and many were moved to dance the evening away.
If you missed out on the event, don’t worry! The 2nd Annual Puttin’ on the Litz Gala is already in the works, and it aims to be even better than the first! Be on the lookout for more information over the next couple of months. In the meantime, visit your local library to check out all that you’ve been missing, and visit us at www.gwinnettpl.org/foundation to see how you can help Gwinnett have the best libraries out there!
