NOTICE TO PARENTS

. . .If Your Child Does Not Have a Ride Home When We Close . . .

Our branches are frequently crowded during open hours, but once we close they are deserted and there is no access to a telephone.

We don't want to put a child at risk. Therefore, it is the policy of this library system not to leave a juvenile (anyone under 18) alone after a branch closes. Staff will remain with any child who does not have a ride. Also, library staff will offer to stay with an adult who does not have a ride. Many children are embarrassed by this, and parents have occasionally become angry because someone waited with their child, but safety is our primary concern.

This notice is to alert you to a policy adopted by the Gwinnett County Public Library Board effective October 1, 2004.  Included in the policy is a provision that requires branch staff to contact the police if a child is not picked up within 30 minutes after the library closes. The police are authorized to assess the situation and to transport a child to the police station, home, a neighbor's house, etc. If a child leaves with the police, a notice to parents will be taped to the library door with the information on the action taken.

Although we recognize that many times children rely on other means of transportation besides parents, it is YOUR responsibility to be aware of our closing hours and to make sure your child has a ride.

PLEASE BE AWARE OF THIS LIBRARY POLICY. REMEMBER OUR CLOSING TIMES, AND MAKE SURE YOUR CHILD IS PICKED UP PROMPTLY.
