Special Needs Services

The Gwinnett County Public Library promotes and supports customer accessibility to library services and materials by providing a variety of formats, computers and adaptive equipment.

Special Needs Services

·   Sign language interpreting for deaf or hearing impaired children attending any library story hour or program may be arranged by notifying the library at least 10 days in advance of the program. Call the Library HelpLine at 770-978-5154.

·   Large print books and audio books (on tape and CD) are available at all library branches. Books, DVDs, and videos featuring sign language instruction are also available.

  • All branches provide ADA Accessible Workstation for customers in wheelchairs to use state of the art computer technology, including library catalog, Internet, and other informational databases.

Mailbox Books
for People who are Homebound

·    Mailbox Books Service is available to Gwinnett County Public Library card holders who are unable to visit branch libraries because they are homebound due to chronic illness or a physical disability or condition. Persons who experience a temporary condition which renders them homebound are also eligible for this service.

·   Items are checked out for 42 days. Mailbox Books Customers are exempt from extended loan fees, but are responsible for lost or damaged materials.

·   Materials for loan include large and standard print books, paperback books, magazines, audio books (on tape and CD), DVDs and videos.

·   An application for Mailbox Books must be completed before service can begin.  The application is available online, or may be picked up at any branch. This service is provided at no charge for eligible customers. For more information, see

Located at the Lawrenceville Branch

  • Kurzweil Omni Reading Systems scan and read text aloud making printed materials accessible to users with visual impairments or learning disabilities.
  • A Braille Translator enables users to produce documents in Braille from typed documents, scanned documents, or a disk.
  • Zoom Text allows users with visual impairments to use the library catalog, databases and Internet.
  • CCTV viewer enlarges words and images up to 60 times original size for ease in reading print materials.
  • JAWS is a computer screen reader for the blind and visually impaired.
  • TDD/TTY is the text telephone for the hearing impaired. There is a TDD/TTY available at all branches for public use.
