About the Artist
Kim McMillan is an artist dedicated to the fields of teaching, art appreciation and personal expression through art. While pursuing a Fine Arts degree at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia, she concentrated her studies in Elementary and Secondary Art Education, knowing that her love for art was rivaled only by her desire to develop that passion in others.
From college, Kim periodically taught privately while raising and educating four children of her own. She, along with her musician husband Robert, are now blessed to be the grandparents of eight.
Since the early 90's, she has been involved in curriculum development and teaching at Master's Academy of Fine Arts, an art school for homeschooled students based on an historical model of teaching all the arts in their original context. Artios became the natural extension of Master's, where high school students majored in their chosen concentration. Kim developed their college prep program, directed the Art department and taught there until 2008.
It was also during this time that she became involved in theater through set design and production. Most recently, she finds herself drawn to more tactile expressions like stained glass mosaics, and what she lovingly calls assemblage art...her version of a three dimensional collage. She's fascinated with re-purposing found objects and sometimes blurs the lines between fine, decorative and functional art with some of her creations.
“My strongest desire as an artist is threefold... to maintain a teachable spirit, recognizing that I'll always have more to learn, to love the process as much as the finished piece and finally, to live by my motto...art anywhere!”
Kim continues to teach privately and is currently refreshing her own love of art through more intensive personal expression and exploration.

About the Artist
Talented young artist Kaci Xie created the chair at the SKA Academy. She is 11 years old and is a student from SKA. She explained, "I have always loved art since I was very young. Ever since I joined SKA four years ago, I feel inspired yet excited every time there is an opportunity for me to create an artwork. Art is my passion. It helps me express myself and feel great in every art work I made. I know art is a skill that has to be practiced and shared with others. I push myself to improve my art skills. When I grow up, I wish I can be an industrial designer to develop more art work for people to enjoy and change their life." |

Inspired by the works of Gustav Klimt, and designed to honor all the various avenues of artistic expression, this chair became another experiment in one of Kim's favorite processes ... three dimensional collage. While most of her other works in this area consist of stained glass, paint and a variety of found objects, the “mostly fabric” aspect of the Musing Chair was a pleasant change, and one Kim plans to repeat.
As you travel visually around the chair, you will find the images of a mandolin, the drama masks, a griffin, and various geometric & organic shapes... representing the disciplines of music, drama & theatre, literature and fine arts.
The Musing Chair is intended to be a comfortable spot to relax, be motivated to create or simply to “muse” over whatever it is that inspires you!
