HOW DO I USE WIRELESS AT THE LIBRARY?

• The Gwinnett County Public Library wireless system uses the WiFi standard also known as IEEE (802.11b-g).
• You will need to bring your own WiFi enabled laptop or other wireless device to the library.
• Most WiFi equipment will be compatible. However, the library can make no guarantees as to compatibility of your equipment with the library's network.
• Printers are not part of the Wireless Internet Access program at the library.
• The library's SSID is "gcpllibrary"
• The wireless signal is available daily from 8:45AM to 9:15PM

 
    WILL I NEED ANY SPECIAL SETTINGS OR PASSWORDS TO CONNECT?

• No, the library's network is open to all visitors.
• No special encryption settings, user names, or passwords are required.

Newer operating systems, like Windows XP and VISTA or Mac OS/X, are designed to automatically recognize a wireless network signal. Use the instructions below to configure your wireless adapter only if your laptop has been previously configured for another wireless network or if you are using an older operating system or if your computer cannot automatically connect to the "gcpllibrary" wireless signal. 

Chances are your wireless card or computer will connect automatically to the "gcpllibrary" wireless signal.

You must have "Automatically Detect Setting" selected in IE.

1.      In the Tools menu, click Internet Options.

2.      In the Connections tab, click LAN Settings.

3.      Check Automatically detect settings.

To configure your wireless adapter:

Windows OS: Right-click on My Network Places/Network Neighborhood. Go to Properties. Double-click Wireless Adapter. (Or, simply click on your vendor icon for the wireless adapter in the lower right-hand tool bar.)

Then, follow these five steps:

1. The SSID should be set to "gcpllibrary" (all lowercase letters).
2. A DHCP address will be allocated automatically.
3. The wireless encryption privacy 'WEP' (or WPA) option should be set to "off ".
4. The network type option should be set to "infrastructure" not "ad hoc" (peer-to-peer).
5. Restart (re-boot) the computer. This is not a requirement with the Windows XP system. You can now open a web browser

Mac OS: Click on System Preferences from the Apple menu. Double-click the Network logo. Under Show Menu:

1. Select Airport. Close window.
2. Open Internet connect. Turn on Airport.
3. At Network menu, select “gcpllibrary”. You can now open a web browser.
