About World Book Kids

World Book Kids is an online environment for younger students that blend creativity and wonder in learning.  World Book Kids contains content from World Book Student Discovery Encyclopedia, which has been selected for younger readers, English-language learners, and reluctant readers.  The encyclopedia has dual navigation for searching and browsing, and incorporates inventive activities to engage children’s different learning styles.    

Search Features

• Basic Search: The home page of World Book Kids has a large search box at the top of every page in the site. Users can enter search terms into the search box to search for articles, dictionary definitions, pictures, and maps.

• Spelling Auto-correction: An enhanced spelling correction feature analyzes a misspelled word and chooses the correct spelling.  A new search is performed on the corrected term automatically, while also providing a link to other possible spellings.

• Browse: On the homepage are eight subject categories where users can browse for articles.  The categories are:Arts,History and Government, People, Places, Plants and Animals, Science and Mathematics, Sports and Hobbies, and World Religions.

Other Features

World Book Kids has three categories of fun, educational activities for young users.  Make It! includes hands-on activities, such as Paper Maker, which teaches recycling new paper from old paper.  Think It! includes analytical exercises and puzzles, such as Triangle Hunt.  Be It! contains activities that allow young users to pretend to work in several professions, such as "Dig In! Pretend to Be a Geologist!" an activity that teaches about the soil and its contents.  Each activity is available in a teacher's version, with discussion questions and an evaluation matrix.
