4:30-6:00 pm

Five Norcross teens decorated a purple cart to make it look like a hot rod car. Grill work was on the front with tail pipes and fins on the rear. The teens made "flames" to come out of the pipes. They also made flames for the sides of the hot rod to appear that the car was moving fast. They used various colors of construction paper, yellow, red, black and more. A former puppet was converted into the driver. The car was complete with a stick shift. There were mud flaps over the back wheels. All teens had a good time cutting and pasting. Lemonade, cookies, and chips were eaten in no time! All five teens signed up for the TSRP online.

NOR/LIL TAB MEETING
Thursday, April 24, 2008

Face Front, True Believers!

Twelve -- count 'em, TWELVE -- amazing artists arrived for the latest NOR/LIL TAB team-up, along with our terrifyingly talented TAB reps Diane and Terry from NOR, and Steve and Aaron from LIL! Kyle Puttkammer from the Galactic Quest comic book store came to the Norcross Branch on Thursday, April 24 for a cosmically captivating comic drawing workshop! This electrifying event began with a scintillating superhero secret identity match-up quiz (Kyle was impressed with Steve's choice of the obscure "Jennifer Walters") and announcements about LIL's new teen blog (lilburnteens.blogspot.com) and the Teen Tech Week writing contest! Kyle leaped into action, teaching the attending artists (including Terry, Steve, and Aaron!) all the steps on how to draw by observing the world around us and the steps it takes to turn those drawings into a full-fledged comic book! Lots of the attending teens had some really fantastic artistic talent (see attached pics) and will likely be chronicling the adventures of Superman, Spider-Man, or She-Hulk (aka Jennifer Walters) in the next few years!

Stay tuned for our next TAB event: same TAB time, same TAB channel!

Excelsior! Steve

Lilburn / Norcross TAB Meeting

Feb. 28, 2008

5:30pm

Attending: 11 teens, 4 staff (Steve and Aaron from LIL, Diane and Terry from NOR)

We had 11 teens show up for our Teen Mystery Night.  The teens perused a selection of teen non-fiction forensics books and a selection of teen mystery fiction.  Terry talked about our TAB program in general and the book review contest, and Aaron introduced the idea of starting up our blog.  We had 100 Calorie Snack Packs of Chips Ahoy!, Oreos, and Teddy Grahams followed by a lemonade chaser.  Six teens stuck around to play a game of Clue (apparently, that Professor Plum fellow is quite the scoundrel!).  None of them had ever played, so Steve explained the rules.  All in all, a good night and a good turnout.

Lilburn / Norcross

December 4th, 2007

Attending: 14 teens, 3 TAB reps (Steve from LIL; Diane and Terry from NOR)

Lilburn and Norcross branches teamed up for another successful TAB meeting.  We started with Terry showing the teens around GCPL’s homepage, with special attention paid to the Teen Scene, Safe Place, Tutor.com, and GALILEO (they were told to come see a staff member if they needed help navigating GALILEO).  We then finished our meeting with a cookie decorating party.  We had lots of creative teens there making delicious treats for themselves and to bring home to their families.  14 teens made off with 72 cookies!

We got contact information for all the teens who showed up and tentatively planned our next meeting for Tuesday, January 22nd.

October 18, 2007

Our TAB event was a great success. The theme was "Create Your Costume" to get ideas and help with creating your costume for the Cosplay costume contest at the GRF. Hosted at the NOR branch but a joint effort with LIL, 18 teens participated in planning and making their costumes. The boys gravitated to the pirate's attire while the girls enjoyed dressing up their hair with hair bands. They also used beaded necklaces. All teens were in rare form, enjoying the creativity of making their own outfits and of course enjoying snacks provided by LIL. Steve Thomas, Librarian I, from LIL, co-hosted the event with Diane Granata from NOR.

April 12, 2007

Attendees:  Jarrod, Chantal,  Mario, and Debbie (Teen Rep)

Welcome:The teens introduced themselves and talked about what they wanted to do this summer.

Program:   We discussed the many places that would be interested in hiring teens for the summer and how to do a job search (ask everyone you know, check bulletin boards at grocery stores, houses of worship, inquire at businesses even if there are no “help wanted” signs, etc.); how to present yourself to ace your job interview (no jeans or t-shirts with sayings, clean hair etc.); what an employer is looking for in a good employee (such as showing a real interest in the job, being on time or slightly early for your scheduled start time, and dressed appropriately); the right questions to ask (what are my hours, what are my job duties, what should I wear, and even “May I have this job?”, which is a big brownie point getter with employers), and how to enjoy the job you’ve selected!  Alternative entrepreneurial jobs were suggested, too, such as grass-cutting, yard work, dog-walking and sitting, baby sitting, cleaning, cooking and tutoring.

Next Meeting:

            May meeting date forthcoming.

Upcoming Events:

The Norcross Paint and Pizza Event is our July Project!  We’ll be sprucing up by painting part of the patio at the Norcross branch. Project date forthcoming.

 TAB Members Present:

Jeff V., Victoria R., Suleyzi F., Leydi S., Jared M., Kensley C., Sydney W.

TAB Rep:  Michelle S.

New members were introduced to the group. In Michael’s absence, Jeff V. led the group and reported on current TAB web site information and introduced the Gwinnett Reads Teen Book Cover Contest.  An illuminating book discussion followed on “To Kill a Mockingbird”.  Many of the members had interesting comments and questions about the plot of the book.  The group was quick to understand the relationship the book had with historical events and aspects of their own community. They also understood that Teens were being asked to participate in a special part of this Gwinnett Reads Event with the Art Cover Contest, because of the prior publicity at school.  More discussion followed on general creative ideas for their own version of the book cover. While some members read from the book and sketched; others spent time researching the book on the internet for cover ideas.

Everyone was reminded to talk to their friends at school and invite them to participate in the contest as well as invite them to attend a TAB meeting. Contest entries are due at the branch by Feb 3rd.

The group hopes to begin the concrete painting in the garden as soon as the weather cooperates.

TAB Reps:  Terry, Justin, and Michelle

All of the attendees enjoyed and participated in the activities of our second annual December Holiday TAB Event. We began our meeting/event with refreshments provided by one of the Teen Reps and followed with crafts and caroling.  A special guest participant and Norcross library associate, Matilda W., provided the musical accompaniment to the carolers. Surprised customers were greeted with songs of holiday cheer at the entrance to the library. Some even joined the group for awhile. By the end of the evening all were in the holiday spirit. Many of the teens talked comfortably with the staff expressing new ideas for 2006 and a desire to continue attending the TAB meetings and programs.

NORCROSS TAB MINUTES, 10/24/05

Present:  Michael, Jeremiah and TAB Reps. Terry J and Justin M

Fire Mountain provided some great cookies.

We discussed our upcoming poetry night.  We settled on Mon., Nov. 14, from 7pm to 8pm as the date and time.  Michael will be the MC, and will also read some poetry.  Jeremiah has written several poems, and will read some of them.  Anyone wishing to may read a poem.  We will have some cookies, soda and perhaps some hot chocolate for the audience.  We will bring in some light strings to provide ambience, and perhaps some table cloths, etc.  The TAB Reps will make some flyers which the TABs can take to school to advertise the Poetry Night.

We decorated the Teen area for Halloween, including making a headless horseman, sans horse.

We also settled on having a party in Dec. to celebrate the season, and our accomplishments thus far.  Michael asked if we could have it on a Fri night, after hours.  We will discuss this with Michelle and the branch managers.

Next TAB meetings:

Nov. 14, after the Poetry Night

Dec. 12 or 16, depending on whether we can have it after hours on Fri.
