LILBURN TAB MEETING MINUTES
Lilburn / Norcross TAB Meeting
Feb. 28, 2008
5:30pm
Attending: 11 teens, 4 staff (Steve and Aaron from LIL, Diane and Terry from NOR)
We had 11 teens show up for our Teen Mystery Night. The teens perused a selection of teen non-fiction forensics books and a selection of teen mystery fiction. Terry talked about our TAB program in general and the book review contest, and Aaron introduced the idea of starting up our blog. We had 100 Calorie Snack Packs of Chips Ahoy!, Oreos, and Teddy Grahams followed by a lemonade chaser. Six teens stuck around to play a game of Clue (apparently, that Professor Plum fellow is quite the scoundrel!). None of them had ever played, so Steve explained the rules. All in all, a good night and a good turnout.
Lilburn / Norcross
December 4th, 2007
Attending: 14 teens, 3 TAB reps (Steve from LIL; Diane and Terry from NOR)
Lilburn and Norcross branches teamed up for another successful TAB meeting. We started with Terry showing the teens around GCPL’s homepage, with special attention paid to the Teen Scene, Safe Place, Tutor.com, and GALILEO (they were told to come see a staff member if they needed help navigating GALILEO). We then finished our meeting with a cookie decorating party. We had lots of creative teens there making delicious treats for themselves and to bring home to their families. 14 teens made off with 72 cookies!
We got contact information for all the teens who showed up and tentatively planned our next meeting for Tuesday, January 22nd.

Who: 13 attendees (including 2 adults, who played a game at an adjoining table while their kids played), with Teen Rep Steve Thomas
What: Teen Game Day!
We enjoyed snacks, including St. Patty’s cookies and lemonade, while the teens did an icebreaker on learning Irish vocabulary words (banshee, tanistry, blarney, limerick, shillelagh, etc.). Then, from 11am – 1pm, we played a variety of games: Rack-O, Boggle, Scrabble and Clue. A good time was had by all, and most of the teens were very excited to get involved with the TAB.
Potential Future Projects: book discussions (titles suggested: Maximum Ride, Abarat, Everlost, Alfred Kropp – one of the teens checked out a copy of this and will report back if she thinks we should sign up for the author “conference call”); have the teens do story time for the preschoolers; put on a play, like Romeo & Juliet; decorate the teen area; have a “Learn to Draw Manga” workshop; raise money for the library or Relay

Saturday, October 2nd @ 3:00pm
2 attendees, 2 librarians
1. Introductions and Welcome-
Although only 2 members attended many a have stated a desire to join TAB. Many members just could not attend on a Saturday with such short notice. TAB member also decided to discuss the possibility of elections at the next TAB meeting.
2. Discussion of Mission Statement-
TAB discussed the various Mission Statements presented and decided that the making of our Mission Statement should be addressed at the next meeting. Members wanted ample time to think and discuss the prospect of our Mission Statement with other members. As an initial Mission Statement and a launching ground for the Mission Statement, we believe the TAB should be a way to get teens interested in the library and input their ideas.
3. Program Ideas-
There were many, many, many program ideas that were discussed at the meeting. Many of these are branch specific. TAB members thought it would be a wonderful idea if a list of all program ideas were passed around to each of the TAB committees and each chose two from the list to sponsor. Some Lilburn TAB program ideas include:
Karaoke night Bake Sales
SAT prep course night Babysitting course night
Library Lock-in Art & Photography Exhibition
Teen Book Club Library Field Day
Video Game Tournament Halloween Costume Part
Literacy Walk Scavenger Hunts
Self-defense class Science Week
Passive program ideas include:
Movie word scrambles Music scrambles
Name the Movie Scene More poetry & writing contests
Art contests Movie and Music Trivia
4. Advertising and Promotion-
Advertising and promotion were discussed. Members believe that better advertising should be implemented. For example, advertising at local schools, roadside signs for TAB Meetings and events, TAB advertise themselves by hand delivering and posting flyers, designating a page in the fall programming guide or a TAB newsletter or brochure. Members also suggested postcards in teen books.
5. Teen Scene Page-
Members were at first not aware of the Teen Scene Page. They decided that the Teen Scene Page needs to be more prominent on the GCPL website. They also thought to put it as a hotlink on the Kids Catalog as well.
6. Meeting Times-The general consensus of both librarians and members stated that weeknights were a better time to meet rather than a weekend. The members believed that Thursday nights were generally not as busy as other nights of the week and concluded that meeting between 5:00-7:00pm would allow them ample time to complete various tasks at home before attending the meeting. The members also advised on getting other members input as well on a time to meet. TAB also thought the idea of meeting at another location such as a restaurant or park would be acceptable. TAB members also agreed meeting should be held regularly once a month; contact by phone is preferable.
