Five Forks Teen Advisory Board Meeting Minutes

February TAB Meeting minutes
Five Forks Branch
“The Chocolate Wars”
February 13, 2008
We started the meeting off by introducing ourselves (this was only my second TAB meeting since coming to FFR) and I asked each member to write down a book suggestion or a book they would like to read. Then each member took turns sitting in the ‘hot seat’ blindfolded and taste-tested two candy bar pieces. Each member had two separate turns guessing which delightful delicacy they were tasting. The Hershey’s cookies n’ crème bar seemed to be the favorite. Then the members divided into two teams. Surgical gloves were handed out for each member to wear. The team that un-wrapped all their Hershey’s kisses first was declared the winners. We had two bags of kisses left, enough for a rematch.
We discussed possible meeting ideas for the weeks to come. This included a monthly get together to play games and discuss the new books in the teen section and maybe an after hours event for St. Patrick’s Day. Our next meeting will be scheduled in March around St. Patrick’s Day.
The meeting wrapped up by discussing some of the titles included in the Valentine’s display and putting all the remaining kisses and candy bar pieces in Valentine’s Day goody bags. We had 11 kids attend this meeting and two parents.
Five Forks TAB Meeting Notes November 17, 2005
Leader; Allisan Mintz
Teens; Katina, Radhika, Becky, Laura and Armina
Our meeting began with the sign in sheet and a “Meet and Greet”. We welcomed new teens, Becky, Laura and Armina to our TAB.
Old Business included e-mail address corrections and picture name badges. Photo release forms were passed out to Radhika, Becky and Laura. The group talked about the writing contest. Many of the attending teens had submitted entries in the contest.
We were disappointed that the anthology copies were both checked out. Next month, we will be sure to reserve them so that the TAB group will be able to view a copy.
The new business discussed began with our Journaling Class, which is scheduled for Saturday, December 3rd at our Five Forks Branch. The group was excited about making the journals and learning writing tips. The teens loved the Thanksgiving crossword puzzle which is our monthly teen project. Many expressed interest in crosswords as a fun hobby. All five girls are currently working to finish the puzzle. The group would like to have an open mike night in January. All of the girls are going to talk it up with friends to see how many teens might be interested in having a poetry reading night at the branch in January. They requested that we use the meeting room for the event. A sign up sheet, kept at the information desk was also discussed. We will make a poster to advertise the January meeting and event. It will be placed on the teen bulletin board. We also talked about the 2006 programs. All were excited about teen participation in next years’ Gwinnett Reads program.
Our beautiful snack trays of fruit and cookies were provided by Ryan’s Steakhouse. The meeting ended at 7:50.

The teens felt more comfortable when the saw what our volunteers do. After the tour and discussion each teen asked for a volunteer application.
Our TAB members are encouraged to visit the Teen Scene at http://www.gwinnettpl.org/TeenScene/Main.htm often. The teens had questions about the date for the Teen Improv Night. They worried that we would have a poor turn out because of the 4th of July holiday.
The group was curious about the title of the July movie. I let them know that we will have more information at the May meeting.
There was much excitement about this activity. There will be more information soon.
Again, the movie title is a concern for those who like to be in the know..
We will have our Jillian’s Bowling Party on Friday, June 17th from 4-6. We told our TAB teens that invitations will be going out soon to active members, and they will need to RSVP. Once we receive our RSVPs, we will work out any transportation issues the teens may have.

The group discussed the logistics of having a system wide Lock-In and how things were progressing in that area.
The group leaders talked about the Teen Scene web site and the recent changes.
To help with promotion, publicity and scheduling the group decided to pick the next 3 meeting days in advance. Thursday, October 21st, 2004
The Five Forks TAB group met on Thursday October 21st at 7:00 pm in the story pit.
Allisan and Dee were the adult moderators. Six teens were in attendance; Hilary, Katherine, Katina, Shaina, Shantell and Olivia. There was an incorrect meeting date published on the Teen Scene website. Many of the teens said the other members came on the published Wednesday night.
Shantell read the minutes from the September meeting. Hilary was chosen as the October scribe. The minutes were written by Hilary with help from Shaina.
The prototype name badges were passed out. All enjoyed wearing them because of the Halloween theme. Ideas for the permanent badges were discussed. The group decided upon having both their name and their picture on the badge. The picture will appear on the left, the name on the right and Teen Advisory Board across the bottom. Members will be contacted by email to set up a time and date to have their picture made for the badge. Several members have not had their permission forms signed. The teens without signed publicity forms took home a second copy for parent approval.
Shantell, head of the Halloween committee gave her report on “Scary Story Night”. The teens enjoyed being a part of Miss Kendra’s children’s night. They were happy to pass out coupons and help in any way possible.
Teen Read Week was discussed. The group was excited about the upcoming “Edward Scissorhands” movie. They were also happy that the library has so many special activities for teens this month. All have entered the daily drawings and “Alive Movie” contests.
The Lock-In Committee drew an idea poster for Beth McIntyre. They will leave it in her office along with a note. We discussed the possibility of having a Lock-In with the other TAB groups at the end of the school year. Miss Allisan let them know that Miss Kendra is working on some ideas that will be discussed at a later meeting.
The next meeting will be held on Tuesday, November 16th at 7:00 pm in the Teen Area.
